Paul's Pedals. Paul's Pedals

Cheap Yamaha Compressor.

I actually use this most of the time, having got used to its capabilities. Even different compressors can be very different, for instance I got a Demeter Compulator and found it unusable on the recording because it sent through so much more treble than I was used to. In general, I think that unless you are a rock star with a guitar tech it is better to use stuff that you are familiar with in the studio, or you end up in trouble. The same was true of a Quad box I hired and then didn't bother with, because I couldn't pull the right sound out of it. So the Yamaha compressor features muchly on the recording...

Ibanez Tube Screamer.

The old standby. Featured on Summer in particular.Listen To Summer.

Big Muff Pedal.

The classic grunge distortion. Heard on the 4/4 guitar sections of Treeline.Listen To Treeline.

Rocktek Metal Worker pedal.

Cheap but cool distortion. Used for feedback on the "symphony of noise" at the end of Palisades.

Digitech Whammy Pedal.

Heard on the fills on TRB. These were recorded with the Hipshot equipped Tele and the Whammy pedal, so I could bend notes up or down- sometimes simultaneously.Listen To TRB solo. Also heard briefly on Summer, just before the drums kick back in.

Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah Pedal.

A great recreation of a Jimi Hendrix wah. The only bummer is getting service, I hate being told to send something back to America so they can look at it. Hey, I'm in Australia...This pedal heard briefly on Summer.Listen To Summer.

DOD FX 17 Wah Pedal.

The Wah heard on Collide-A-Scope. Not quality, but interesting.

Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeller.

I mostly have this so I can do looping live, but I used it for the backwards guitar on TRB. The sound was generated by running the main solo into the DL4 to generate the backwards parts. What the DL4 does is chop the sound up, delay it and reverse it. So, "real time" backwards guitar.Listen To TRB solo.

Not pictured:

Line 6 Distortion Modeller, used at the very start of Summer. To my mind it doesn't nail the sounds it models, and for instance I can compare my Big Muff directly with the Line 6's Big Muff model. But I don't own a Fuzz Face or a Jet Fuzz...
